Computers, printers, scanners and other types of peripheral hardware are located throughout your pharmacy – whether at tills, in the dispensary or in the office. Keeping these devices clean and sanitary is important for the health and safety of both employees and customers.

The following recommendations will help your team maintain clean computers and peripherals, and minimize risk from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Recommended Cleaning Process

Use an alcohol-based cleaner with a minimum concentration of 70% alcohol or premanufactured disinfectant towelettes with a minimum 70% concentration. DO NOT use ammonia-based or chlorine-based cleaners.

  • As a precaution, turn the device OFF

  • Do not apply liquids directly to devices

  • Apply the approved cleaner to a soft cloth or use premanufactured disinfectant towelettes

  • Wipe down exterior surfaces of the device with the soft cloth or towelette

  • Pay close attention to high touch areas such as smart touch panels, lids, paper trays, keyboards and handheld devices

Note: Harsh chemicals can cause the screen on debit/credit PIN pads to crack. TD recommends a cleaning process outlined in Best Practices for Cleaning Debit/Credit Devices.

Best Practices

  • All electronic hardware supplied to pharmacies is designed to withstand daily cleaning and disinfecting to minimize the risk of cross contamination.

  • These devices should be cleaned at least once daily using the process described above.

  • Device users should also practice good personal hygiene, including frequent hand washing for at least 20 seconds with soap and water, or using alcohol-based hand sanitizers with 60-90% alcohol content.

You can be confident that PTS Field Service Technicians follow these recommended disinfecting methods prior to handling any equipment and upon service completion.
