Entering an Alternate DIN
When Mixtures and Free-Form drugs are added to PharmaClik Rx they are assigned a negative DIN. Since a negative DIN is not a real DIN, it will not be accepted when submitted to a third party for payment. To avoid this problem, you can enter an Alternative DIN for any DIN in the Drug File. An Alternative DIN is the DIN or PIN that is submitted to the third party instead of the Drug File DIN.
Example:
When you need to dispense a new medication that hasn't been added to the Drug File, the drug must be entered as a Free-Form drug. The medication’s real DIN would be entered as the Alternative DIN for the Free-Form drug.
LTC Alternative DINs can also be set for a drug or mixture. When a prescription is filled for a patient in a provincially registered long-term care facility, the LTC Alternative DIN can be used for claims adjudication instead of the regular DIN. This is meant for adjudicating government stock claims that require pseudoDINs (e.g. the ODB LTC Stock Replenishment Initiative). Press here for more information about LTC Alternative DINs.
Note: For British Columbia pharmacies only: When adding Mixtures and Free-Form drugs, you must add an overall Alternative DIN rule for the All option. The All option's Alternative DIN must be the PharmaNet PIN. This allows the PharmaNet PIN to print on the prescription receipt.
To enter an Alternative DIN in the Drug folder, do the following:
- Open the Drug Folder.
- Search for and select the drug.
- Press the Alternatives tab.
- Press the Add button. A row is added to the Alternatives box.
- In the Third Party Plan dropdown list, select the third party and plan for which the DIN is being entered or select *All* - All to enter a DIN that applies to all third parties.
Note: To set the custom class for all plans within a third party, choose the 'All' option for that third party (e.g. Green Shield - All).
- In the PIN field, enter the DIN to be submitted. If this is the *All* - All rule for a Free-Form drug, enter the actual DIN for the drug. If rule is for a third party, enter the DIN that the third party requires for the drug.
- The LTC flag should be OFF, unless this PIN only applies to patients in registered long-term care facilities.
- Press the Save or OK button (the available action button depends on how the Drug Folder was accessed).
