Inactivating or Discontinuing a Retail Prescription
When a prescription is inactivated, the Active flag is removed from the profile and all remaining refills are retained. When a prescription is inactivated in a British Columbia pharmacy, it is inactivated on the LOCAL system without transmitting to PharmaNet. Inactive prescriptions can be reactivated.
When a prescription is suspended, the Active flag is removed from the profile and all remaining refills are retained. The prescription is temporarily inactivated until a specified date, at which time PharmaClik Rx automatically reactivates the prescription. For pharmacies servicing long-term care facilities, this feature is useful when a doctor orders a temporary hold on a patient’s medication, meaning nursing staff will stop administering the medication for a set time period, or until further notice. When a prescription is suspended in a British Columbia pharmacy, it is inactivated on the LOCAL system without transmitting to PharmaNet, and later automatically reactivated without transmitting to PharmaNet. Suspended prescriptions can be reactivated.
When a prescription is discontinued, the Active flag is removed from the profile and all remaining refills are wiped out. The discontinued indicator *D* appears in the profile. When a prescription is discontinued in a British Columbia pharmacy, it is also discontinued on PharmaNet and the PharmaClik Rx prescription status changes to Discontinued. Discontinued prescriptions can be reactivated in all provinces except British Columbia.
When a prescription is inactivated, suspended or discontinued using the Active flag in the patient’s Profile, a notes function provides the ability to document the reason why the prescription is being inactivated. The note will be documented in the Discontinued Prescription window and will be linked to the prescription. Although the notes function is available, it is not necessary to document why the prescription was inactivated or discontinued (EXCEPTION: British Columbia pharmacies must document why the prescription was discontinued/inactivated).
Note: Inactive, Suspended and Discontinued prescriptions do not print on the Medication Record.
